Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound

A detailed ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland and selected structures in the neck.

What is it?

A thyroid and neck ultrasound uses sound waves to examine the thyroid gland and, where clinically indicated, nearby lymph nodes, salivary glands or a specific neck lump. It can describe the size and appearance of the thyroid and identify nodules, cysts or inflammation. Ultrasound alone cannot determine the nature of every lump; some findings require blood tests, follow-up or needle sampling.

Is it for me?

  • A visible or palpable lump in the neck
  • Thyroid enlargement or suspected goitre
  • A thyroid nodule found during examination or on another scan
  • Neck swelling, discomfort or pressure symptoms
  • Monitoring a known thyroid nodule or thyroid condition
  • Abnormal thyroid tests together with clinical findings
  • Assessment of selected lymph nodes or salivary-gland symptoms
Important: Seek urgent medical advice for rapidly increasing neck swelling, significant breathing difficulty or sudden difficulty swallowing.

Preparing for your test

  • No fasting is usually required and you can take medicines as normal
  • Wear a loose or open-necked top and avoid polo necks or tight collars
  • Remove necklaces and other jewellery around the neck before the scan
  • Avoid applying heavy creams to the neck on the day of the test
  • Bring previous thyroid blood results, scan reports or biopsy results if available

What to expect

  • You will lie on your back, usually with your neck gently extended
  • Water-based gel is applied to the front and sides of your neck
  • The probe is moved over the area and measurements and images are recorded
  • You may be asked to turn your head slightly or swallow
  • This appointment is for imaging only unless a separate procedure has specifically been arranged

Practical information

Duration: A typical examination takes around 15–30 minutes.

Comfort: The test is usually painless, although gentle pressure may be uncomfortable over a tender area.

Safety: Ultrasound uses no ionising radiation.

Results: The report may recommend clinical review, blood tests, surveillance or specialist assessment. A biopsy is a separate procedure and is not automatically included.
