What is it?
Phlebotomy is the collection of blood from a vein, usually in the arm, using a sterile single-use needle. The sample is labelled and sent to the appropriate laboratory for the tests requested by your doctor or other authorised clinician.

Preparing for your test
- Confirm whether your requested tests require fasting; if fasting is required, follow the exact instructions provided — plain water is often allowed
- Do not stop medicines unless the requesting clinician specifically tells you to do so
- Bring the original request form or electronic request details and proof of identity where required
- Drink some water beforehand unless you have been told to restrict fluids; being well hydrated can make collection easier
- Tell the clinician if you are prone to fainting, have difficult veins, take anticoagulants, have a bleeding disorder, or have restrictions on which arm may be used
What to expect
- Your identity and requested tests will be checked before collection
- A tourniquet is placed around the upper arm and the skin is cleaned
- A sterile needle is inserted into a vein and one or more sample tubes are filled
- The needle is removed and pressure is applied, followed by a small dressing
- The samples are labelled and prepared for transport to the laboratory
Practical information
Duration: Collection usually takes only a few minutes, although you may need to wait or lie down if you feel faint.
Aftercare: Keep pressure on the site as advised. Minor bruising can occur and usually settles without treatment.
Test arrangements: Bring the request information supplied by your clinician so the correct samples can be collected and processed.
Results: Turnaround time varies considerably by test. Results should be reviewed by the clinician who requested them and interpreted in context.
