24-Hour Blood Pressure Monitoring

A more complete picture of your blood pressure during normal daily life and sleep.

What is it?

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring uses an upper-arm cuff connected to a small portable recorder. The device measures your blood pressure automatically at regular intervals for about 24 hours, including while you sleep. It can show patterns that a single clinic reading may miss.

Is it for me?

Confirm or exclude high blood pressure
Investigate possible white-coat hypertension, where readings are higher in a clinic
Identify masked hypertension, where clinic readings appear normal but readings elsewhere are high
Assess dizziness, faintness or suspected low blood pressure
Check whether blood pressure medicines are working throughout the day and night
Assess night-time blood pressure patterns

Preparing for your test

Wear a loose-fitting top with wide or flexible sleeves so the cuff can inflate comfortably
Arrange a fairly typical day; the aim is to measure your blood pressure during normal activities
Bathe or shower before the monitor is fitted, as the device must be kept dry while worn
Continue your medication unless your doctor has specifically advised otherwise, and bring an up-to-date medication list
Make sure you can return the monitor at the agreed time the following day

What to expect

A cuff will be fitted to your upper arm and connected to a small recorder worn on a belt or shoulder strap
The cuff will inflate regularly during the day and less frequently overnight; the exact interval is programmed by the clinic
When the cuff inflates, keep your arm relaxed and still whenever it is safe to do so
You may be asked to record activities, symptoms, medicines, bedtime and waking time in a diary
Continue most normal activities, but avoid swimming, bathing, showering and activities that could damage the equipment

Practical information

Appointments: You will need a short fitting appointment and must return the equipment after approximately 24 hours.

Comfort: Repeated cuff inflation may briefly feel tight and can disturb sleep. Contact the clinic if you develop persistent pain, marked swelling, numbness or significant skin irritation.

Equipment: Keep the recorder dry and do not disconnect or remove it unless staff have instructed you how and when to do so.

Results: The readings are downloaded and analysed after the monitor is returned, then interpreted by your clinician.
